New figures from the ONS show that the number of people in employment increased by 512,000. Unemployment fell by 58,000 between September and November to 1.91 million.
For older workers the number of people aged 50-64 in work continued to increase, going up 45,000 to 8.11 million. The employment rate rose 0.1 per cent to 68.9 per cent, and was up 0.7 per cent on a year earlier.
The number of people aged 65 and over also rose, up 23,000 to 1.13 million. However, the increase was solely in favour of older men, who experienced a rise of 24,000 in contrast to a drop of 1,000 for older women.
